A supplier must register when aggregate turnover in a financial year exceeds ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (₹20 lakh and ₹10 lakh in specified special category States). Inter-State suppliers of goods, e-commerce sellers (with limited exceptions), casual and non-resident taxable persons and persons liable under reverse charge must register regardless of turnover (Section 24).

How long does GST registration take?

Where Aadhaar authentication is completed and there is no query, registration is usually granted within 7 working days of the application. Small businesses with B2B output tax up to ₹2.5 lakh a month can opt for Rule 14A and get registration within 3 working days. If the officer raises a query (REG-03) or orders physical verification, it can take up to 30 days.

Do I need a separate registration for each State?

Yes. GST registration is State-wise. If you have a place of business in more than one State, you need a registration in each, and you can now apply for several States together with one Master TRN.
